Zagreb sits inland in continental Croatia, a genuinely different character from the coastal Dalmatian cities most couples picture for a Croatian wedding: cobbled Upper Town streets, Austro-Hungarian architecture, and a central European capital’s energy rather than an island or a stretch of Adriatic coastline. This page looks at Zagreb specifically, separate from the Croatia country page elsewhere on this site, which spreads out across the whole country.

I photograph weddings across the city, a reception in a grand hotel ballroom, portraits through the Upper Town’s old streets, a ceremony with the cathedral spires in the background. Below are the real venues worth knowing, plus the questions couples ask me most before booking a wedding here.

From Intimate Elopements to Big Weddings in Zagreb

Zagreb works well for a couple who wants a genuine city backdrop without losing the intimacy of a smaller celebration, its grand hotel ballrooms scale from an intimate dinner to several hundred guests without ever feeling like a different venue.

I photograph:
– quiet, intentional elopements with just the two of you
– small weddings with close family and friends
– full wedding days with a larger guest count
– multi-day wedding celebrations, including welcome dinners and relaxed moments before or after the wedding

No matter the size or length of the celebration, my focus is always the same: real moments, strong atmosphere, and portraits that feel natural rather than posed. The scale may change, but the intention doesn’t.

Wedding Videographer in Zagreb: Photo and Hybrid Video Coverage

Alongside photography, I also offer wedding video coverage in Zagreb as part of a hybrid photo and video approach.

Video is treated as an extension of the photography, captured with the same sensitivity to light, timing, and atmosphere. The focus stays on real moments, movement, and sound, without staged scenes or intrusive production.

For weddings that benefit from an additional perspective, a dedicated videographer can also be included, always working in the same calm, unobtrusive way and fully aligned with how I photograph the day.

This approach works especially well for destination weddings, where intimacy, setting, and emotion matter more than spectacle.

The Wedding Venues at Zagreb

An Art Nouveau grand hotel on the city’s main square, a historic hotel with its own ballrooms named for Croatian bans, and the Upper Town’s old streets for portraits.

Wedding venue near Zagreb

Hotel Esplanade Zagreb
Opened in 1925 beside Zagreb’s main railway station to receive passengers of the Orient Express, and still carries that Art Nouveau character through its public rooms today. The Emerald Ballroom, under a domed ceiling, holds up to 365 guests for a reception, and the Oleander Terrace, used for ceremonies and larger receptions alike, holds up to 1,000. The hotel’s 1925 Lounge keeps its original Art Deco look for a smaller gathering.

Hotel Dubrovnik, Ban Jelačić Square
Despite the name, this hotel sits in the heart of Zagreb itself, right on the city’s main square. Its four ballrooms, named Ban Jelačić, Ban Zrinski, Ban Mažuranić, and Ban Dašković, hold up to 220 guests between them, and several of Zagreb’s churches, including St Mark’s and the Cathedral, are a short walk away for a ceremony beforehand.

Zagreb’s Upper Town (Gornji Grad)
Not a bookable venue, but the city’s most photographed quarter: cobbled lanes, St Mark’s Church with its tiled roof, and viewpoints over the rooftops below. I’d use it for portraits before or after a ceremony held elsewhere.

Your Zagreb Wedding Photographer

I’m Dejan, a Zagreb wedding photographer.
My focus is always the wedding itself, not performances for the camera. The photos are simply a reflection of the day: genuine, calm, and emotionally grounded.

I take my work seriously, but never myself too seriously. A relaxed atmosphere, clear communication, and quiet confidence make all the difference, especially for destination weddings.

From the moment we met Dejan, he made us feel completely at ease. He has a calm and kind presence, and captured every emotion of the day in a way that felt honest and natural. Nothing felt forced or over-posed, yet he was always in the right place at the right time. His work feels intimate and timeless, and we’ll treasure these photos for the rest of our lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this page different from your Croatia page?

The Croatia page on this site covers the country broadly. This page looks specifically at Zagreb, the country’s inland capital, with Art Nouveau grand hotels and a walkable historic Upper Town rather than an Adriatic coastline.

What’s the best time of year for a Zagreb wedding?

Late spring (May and June) and early autumn (September) bring mild temperatures and fewer crowds than Dalmatia’s coast sees in summer. Zagreb’s continental climate means winters turn genuinely cold, so an indoor ballroom wedding works better outside the colder months.

Which airport should our guests fly into?

Zagreb has its own international airport about 17km from the city center, with direct connections to most major European hubs, which makes it one of the more straightforward Croatian destinations for guests to reach without a connecting flight.

Can Hotel Esplanade or Hotel Dubrovnik host our full guest list?

Yes. Hotel Esplanade’s Oleander Terrace holds up to 1,000 guests and its Emerald Ballroom up to 365, while Hotel Dubrovnik’s four ballrooms together hold up to 220, so both scale well beyond an intimate wedding. I’d confirm your exact layout directly with whichever venue you choose.

Do we need a wedding planner in Zagreb?

Not necessarily. Both hotels run their own in-house events teams who coordinate weddings regularly, which makes Zagreb more straightforward to plan remotely than a destination built around private villas. A local planner is still useful if you want a ceremony outside the hotel itself.
