A two-tiered waterfall thundering into a rugged canyon, the last major stop on Iceland’s Golden Circle

Gullfoss is a genuinely spectacular two-tiered waterfall on the Hvita river, and honestly one of the busiest tourist stops in Iceland, so it works best for this site as a portrait location rather than a ceremony site. This page looks at Gullfoss specifically, separate from the wider Iceland country page elsewhere on this site, which spreads out across the whole country.

I photograph couples here for portraits against the falls and the canyon below, usually as one stop on a longer Golden Circle shoot rather than the day’s main location. Below is what to know about the location itself, plus the questions couples ask me most before planning a visit.

From Intimate Elopements to Big Weddings in Gullfoss

Gullfoss suits a short portrait stop within a longer elopement day rather than the ceremony itself, the crowds here make real privacy difficult most of the day.

I photograph:
– quiet, intentional elopements with just the two of you
– small weddings with close family and friends
– full wedding days with a larger guest count
– multi-day wedding celebrations, including welcome dinners and relaxed moments before or after the wedding

No matter the size or length of the celebration, my focus is always the same: real moments, strong atmosphere, and portraits that feel natural rather than posed. The scale may change, but the intention doesn’t.

Wedding Videographer in Gullfoss: Photo and Hybrid Video Coverage

Alongside photography, I also offer wedding video coverage in Gullfoss as part of a hybrid photo and video approach.

Video is treated as an extension of the photography, captured with the same sensitivity to light, timing, and atmosphere. The focus stays on real moments, movement, and sound, without staged scenes or intrusive production.

For weddings that benefit from an additional perspective, a dedicated videographer can also be included, always working in the same calm, unobtrusive way and fully aligned with how I photograph the day.

This approach works especially well for destination weddings, where intimacy, setting, and emotion matter more than spectacle.

About Gullfoss

A major waterfall and Golden Circle landmark, genuinely busy with tourists, best used for portraits rather than a ceremony.

Gullfoss Waterfall
The Hvita river drops in two stages into a rugged canyon, throwing up enough spray on a sunny day to catch a rainbow. It’s one of the three stops on the classic Golden Circle route, alongside Geysir and Thingvellir, which means it’s genuinely crowded for most of the day, every day, in high season. A viewing platform runs close to the upper falls for a dramatic but public backdrop.

Timing around the crowds
Early morning or close to closing light gives the best chance at a quieter frame, and winter visits, while colder and shorter on daylight, thin the crowds considerably compared to summer.

Your Gullfoss Wedding Photographer

I’m Dejan, a Gullfoss wedding photographer.
My focus is always the wedding itself, not performances for the camera. The photos are simply a reflection of the day: genuine, calm, and emotionally grounded.

I take my work seriously, but never myself too seriously. A relaxed atmosphere, clear communication, and quiet confidence make all the difference, especially for destination weddings.

From the moment we met Dejan, he made us feel completely at ease. He has a calm and kind presence, and captured every emotion of the day in a way that felt honest and natural. Nothing felt forced or over-posed, yet he was always in the right place at the right time. His work feels intimate and timeless, and we’ll treasure these photos for the rest of our lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this page different from your Iceland page?

The Iceland page on this site covers the whole country. This page looks specifically at Gullfoss, a Golden Circle waterfall best used for portraits rather than a ceremony.

Can we actually hold a ceremony at Gullfoss?

You can, but honestly the crowds here make real privacy difficult most of the day. I’d treat it as a portrait stop within a longer Golden Circle day rather than the ceremony location itself.

How far is it from Reykjavik?

About an hour and a half by road, and it’s commonly combined with Geysir and Thingvellir on the same Golden Circle day trip.

What’s the best time of day for photos at Gullfoss?

Early morning, before the tour buses start arriving. Golden hour in summer stretches very late, which also helps thin out the crowds.

Do we need a wedding planner for a Gullfoss visit?

Not specifically for Gullfoss itself, it’s a public waterfall with no booking required, but a planner or celebrant helps more with the legal ceremony elsewhere on your Golden Circle route.
