Edinburgh works as a wedding destination on two levels: the historic Old and New Town, with the castle itself on its volcanic rock at the centre, and the countryside just beyond the city, where a handful of genuine castles sit within easy reach. This page looks at Edinburgh specifically, separate from the Scotland country page elsewhere on this site, which spreads out across the whole country.

I photograph weddings across the city and its surrounds, a ceremony inside the castle walls, a reception at a country house just south of town, portraits along the Royal Mile or up Arthur’s Seat. Below are the real venues worth knowing, plus the questions couples ask me most before booking a wedding here.

From Intimate Elopements to Big Weddings in Edinburgh

Edinburgh works beautifully for an intimate elopement, and just as well for a larger celebration with family flown in from abroad.

I photograph:
– quiet, intentional elopements with just the two of you
– small weddings with close family and friends
– full wedding days with a larger guest count
– multi-day wedding celebrations, including welcome dinners and relaxed moments before or after the wedding

No matter the size or length of the celebration, my focus is always the same: real moments, strong atmosphere, and portraits that feel natural rather than posed. The scale may change, but the intention doesn’t.

Wedding Videographer in Edinburgh: Photo and Hybrid Video Coverage

Alongside photography, I also offer wedding video coverage in Edinburgh as part of a hybrid photo and video approach.

Video is treated as an extension of the photography, captured with the same sensitivity to light, timing, and atmosphere. The focus stays on real moments, movement, and sound, without staged scenes or intrusive production.

For weddings that benefit from an additional perspective, a dedicated videographer can also be included, always working in the same calm, unobtrusive way and fully aligned with how I photograph the day.

This approach works especially well for destination weddings, where intimacy, setting, and emotion matter more than spectacle.

The Wedding Venues in Edinburgh

A fortress on the castle rock itself, an 800-year-old castle just south of the city, and a historic house at the foot of Arthur’s Seat.

Wedding venue near Edinburgh

Edinburgh Castle
The castle itself, on its volcanic rock above the city. The Queen Anne Building takes a ceremony of up to 120 and a reception for up to 170, available for exclusive use (though not during the Military Tattoo each August). The smaller Gatehouse Suite holds up to 40 for both ceremony and reception, St Margaret’s Chapel seats 25 for a religious ceremony only, and the Jacobite Room, used outside normal opening hours, takes up to 100 for dinner or 150 for an evening reception.

Dalhousie Castle, Bonnyrigg
A 13th-century fortress just south of the city, genuinely one of Scotland’s oldest inhabited castles. The Castle Chapel seats 75 for a ceremony or 40 for dining, the Orangery takes 40 seated or 60 standing, and the former ballroom, now the Ramsay Restaurant, holds 85 seated or 100 standing. Exclusive use covers up to 90 seated guests, or 120 in the evening, over a minimum two-night stay.

Prestonfield House
A 17th-century house at the foot of Arthur’s Seat, set in 20 acres of parkland. Its Stables venue is listed at 120 to 500 guests, a figure quoted for corporate events rather than weddings specifically, so I’d confirm a realistic number for your day directly with the venue.

Your Edinburgh Wedding Photographer

I’m Dejan, an Edinburgh wedding photographer.
My focus is always the wedding itself, not performances for the camera. The photos are simply a reflection of the day: genuine, calm, and emotionally grounded.

I take my work seriously, but never myself too seriously. A relaxed atmosphere, clear communication, and quiet confidence make all the difference, especially for destination weddings.

From the moment we met Dejan, he made us feel completely at ease. He has a calm and kind presence, and captured every emotion of the day in a way that felt honest and natural. Nothing felt forced or over-posed, yet he was always in the right place at the right time. His work feels intimate and timeless, and we’ll treasure these photos for the rest of our lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we actually get married inside Edinburgh Castle?

Yes. Several rooms are bookable, most notably the Queen Anne Building for a ceremony of up to 120 with exclusive use. The castle isn’t available during the Military Tattoo each August, worth checking before you set a date.

What’s the best time of year for an Edinburgh wedding?

May, June and September give the most reliable weather while avoiding both winter cold and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August, when the city is at its busiest and accommodation prices climb sharply.

Which airport should our guests fly into?

Edinburgh Airport has direct international flights from across Europe and several long-haul routes, and it sits close to the city centre, the easiest option for most of your guests.

Is Dalhousie Castle really in Edinburgh?

Honestly, no, it’s in Bonnyrigg, Midlothian, around 30 minutes south of the city centre. I mention it here because it’s a genuine castle wedding within easy reach of Edinburgh, not because it sits inside the city itself.

Do we need a wedding planner for a castle venue like this?

I’d recommend one. Edinburgh Castle and Dalhousie Castle both involve exclusive-use bookings, catering logistics and multiple rooms, and a planner who already knows the venue saves real coordination time, especially if you’re planning from abroad.
