Akureyri sits at the head of Eyjafjordur, Iceland’s longest fjord, a genuinely smaller and quieter market than Reykjavik, built around one landmark church and the country’s oldest public garden. This page looks at Akureyri specifically, separate from the wider Iceland country page elsewhere on this site, which spreads out across the whole country.

I photograph weddings across the town, portraits against the church’s stepped facade, a walk through 7,000 plant species in the botanical garden, the fjord itself as a backdrop. Below are the real locations worth knowing, plus the questions couples ask me most before booking a wedding here.

From Intimate Elopements to Big Weddings in Akureyri

Akureyri works well for an intimate elopement, since both locations on this page are genuinely small-scale rather than built for a large wedding party.

I photograph:
– quiet, intentional elopements with just the two of you
– small weddings with close family and friends
– full wedding days with a larger guest count
– multi-day wedding celebrations, including welcome dinners and relaxed moments before or after the wedding

No matter the size or length of the celebration, my focus is always the same: real moments, strong atmosphere, and portraits that feel natural rather than posed. The scale may change, but the intention doesn’t.

Wedding Videographer in Akureyri: Photo and Hybrid Video Coverage

Alongside photography, I also offer wedding video coverage in Akureyri as part of a hybrid photo and video approach.

Video is treated as an extension of the photography, captured with the same sensitivity to light, timing, and atmosphere. The focus stays on real moments, movement, and sound, without staged scenes or intrusive production.

For weddings that benefit from an additional perspective, a dedicated videographer can also be included, always working in the same calm, unobtrusive way and fully aligned with how I photograph the day.

This approach works especially well for destination weddings, where intimacy, setting, and emotion matter more than spectacle.

The Best Wedding Locations in Akureyri

A landmark 1940 parish church and Iceland’s first public garden, both at the heart of the town.

Wedding venue near Akureyri

Akureyrarkirkja, Akureyri
A Lutheran parish church completed in 1940, designed by Icelandic state architect Gudjon Samuelsson, with a stepped concrete facade that’s become the town’s defining landmark. Inside, an altarpiece dating to 1863, a pipe organ with around 3,200 pipes, and a white marble baptismal font. As an active parish church I’d confirm wedding availability directly with the congregation rather than assume it’s open for any date.

Akureyri Botanical Garden, Akureyri
Founded in 1910 by a group of local women, Iceland’s first public park, now holding around 7,000 plant species across 3.6 hectares, from Arctic and high-mountain species to several of the town’s oldest wooden houses. Not a bookable ceremony venue, but a genuinely good one for portraits, especially in the long daylight of a northern Icelandic summer.

Your Akureyri Wedding Photographer

I’m Dejan, a Akureyri wedding photographer.
My focus is always the wedding itself, not performances for the camera. The photos are simply a reflection of the day: genuine, calm, and emotionally grounded.

I take my work seriously, but never myself too seriously. A relaxed atmosphere, clear communication, and quiet confidence make all the difference, especially for destination weddings.

From the moment we met Dejan, he made us feel completely at ease. He has a calm and kind presence, and captured every emotion of the day in a way that felt honest and natural. Nothing felt forced or over-posed, yet he was always in the right place at the right time. His work feels intimate and timeless, and we’ll treasure these photos for the rest of our lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this page different from your Iceland page?

The Iceland page on this site covers the whole country. This page looks specifically at Akureyri, in Iceland’s north, from the landmark 1940 parish church to the country’s first public garden.

Can we actually hold a ceremony at Akureyrarkirkja?

As an active parish church, that’s a conversation for the congregation directly rather than something I can confirm on this page. It’s included here because it’s genuinely the town’s defining building and a striking portrait location regardless.

Which airport should our guests fly into?

Akureyri has its own domestic airport, reached by a short connecting flight from Reykjavik. Guests flying internationally still land at Keflavik first and connect onward from there.

What’s the best time of year for an Akureyri wedding?

June through August for the botanical garden at its fullest and the most reliable northern weather. Akureyri sits far enough north that winter days are genuinely short, worth factoring in if you’re planning outdoor portraits.

Do we need a wedding planner in Akureyri?

It’s a smaller market than Reykjavik, so a local planner or celebrant familiar with the town’s two main locations is worth having, mainly to confirm access and timing well ahead rather than to manage a large guest list.
