Basilicata is the Italy most travelers still haven’t found, and that is exactly its appeal for a wedding. Inland, Matera rises out of limestone ravines in a tangle of cave dwellings and rock cut churches that have been continuously inhabited for thousands of years. The Sassi di Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, make a wedding backdrop unlike anywhere else in the country. An hour and a half south, the region meets the Tyrrhenian Sea at Maratea, where cliffside hotels look straight down onto turquoise coves and a 21 meter Christ the Redeemer statue watches over the coastline from Monte San Biagio.

I photograph weddings across both sides of Basilicata, in the honey colored stone of the Sassi and on the terraces above the sea at Maratea. Couples who choose this region tend to want something their guests haven’t already seen at another Italian wedding, and Basilicata delivers that without trying. Below are five real venues worth researching first, along with answers to the questions couples ask most before booking a wedding here.

From Intimate Elopements to Big Weddings in Basilicata

Basilicata works just as beautifully for intimate elopements as it does for larger and multi-day celebrations.

I photograph:
– quiet, intentional elopements with just the two of you
– small weddings with close family and friends
– full wedding days with a larger guest count
– multi-day wedding celebrations, including welcome dinners and relaxed moments before or after the wedding

No matter the size or length of the celebration, my focus is always the same: real moments, strong atmosphere, and portraits that feel natural rather than posed. The scale may change, but the intention doesn’t.

Wedding Videographer in Basilicata: Photo and Hybrid Video Coverage

Alongside photography, I also offer wedding video coverage in Basilicata as part of a hybrid photo and video approach.

Video is treated as an extension of the photography, captured with the same sensitivity to light, timing, and atmosphere. The focus stays on real moments, movement, and sound, without staged scenes or intrusive production.

For weddings that benefit from an additional perspective, a dedicated videographer can also be included, always working in the same calm, unobtrusive way and fully aligned with how I photograph the day.

This approach works especially well for destination weddings, where intimacy, setting, and emotion matter more than spectacle.

The Best Wedding Venues in Basilicata

Basilicata offers two very different settings for a wedding: the cave city of Matera and the cliffs of Maratea. Each brings its own light, mood, and flow, which matters when planning the photography and video. Below are five real venues worth researching first.

Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita, Matera
Built into the Sassi’s cave dwellings, Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita is an 18 room hotel where ceremonies happen either in a 13th century deconsecrated church restored into an intimate space for around 25 guests, or on a terrace that opens up to 60. Full exclusivity of the property runs from roughly EUR4,500 to EUR7,200 a night depending on season, a serious number that buys you a wedding literally carved into the hillside.

Palazzo Gattini, Matera
On Piazza Duomo in the heart of Matera, Palazzo Gattini is a former noble residence turned luxury hotel with its own Matera Wedding Destination package. It’s worth a direct inquiry to confirm current capacity and pricing, since the property keeps a tight profile online, but its location looking straight across the Sassi from the top of the city is hard to match.

Hotel Santavenere, Maratea
On the cliffs above Maratea, Hotel Santavenere gives couples two very different ceremony settings: a seaside lawn over the Tyrrhenian with its own private beach restaurant and terrace at Il Carrubo, or a quieter, greener spot tucked into the hotel’s own park. The kitchen builds menus that range from classic Italian to the chef’s own creations. Ask directly about guest capacity, since Santavenere doesn’t publish a fixed number.

Hotel Villa Cheta, Maratea / Acquafredda
A smaller, more boutique option a few minutes up the coast from Maratea, Hotel Villa Cheta holds around 80 guests across roughly 20 rooms, with panoramic views over the Porticello bay. Civil ceremonies happen either at the Acquafredda town hall or directly on the hotel’s terraces, and the property works closely with local planner Slow Dreams for full day coordination.

Masseria Fontana di Vite, Matera countryside
For a bigger wedding, Masseria Fontana di Vite sits in the countryside outside Matera and can hold 200 or more guests, with the added convenience of being under an hour from Bari airport, the easiest international gateway into the region.

Your Basilicata Wedding Photographer

I’m Dejan, a Basilicata wedding photographer.
My focus is always the wedding itself, not performances for the camera. The photos are simply a reflection of the day: genuine, calm, and emotionally grounded.

I take my work seriously, but never myself too seriously. A relaxed atmosphere, clear communication, and quiet confidence make all the difference, especially for destination weddings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should we get married in Matera or Maratea?

It depends on the wedding you want. Matera gives you the Sassi’s cave architecture and a sense of history that goes back thousands of years, best photographed in spring or fall when the stone city isn’t at its hottest. Maratea gives you the Tyrrhenian coast, cliffside hotels, and a beach reception, and handles summer heat better since there’s water nearby. Some couples split the two, with a ceremony in Matera and a reception, or a second day shoot, on the coast.

What’s the best time of year for a Basilicata wedding?

Late spring and early fall work best for Matera, since the Sassi’s stone holds heat through summer. Maratea and the coast are more forgiving in July and August, with the sea breeze doing a lot of the work. Either way, book well in advance. Both areas are becoming more popular, and the best venues fill their calendars early.

Which airport should our guests fly into?

Bari is the most practical international airport for Basilicata, with Matera under an hour and a half away by car. For Maratea and the coast, Naples or Salerno can also work depending on flight availability, though it’s a longer drive.

Do we need a wedding planner in Basilicata?

I’d recommend one, especially for a Matera wedding. The Sassi district has real permitting rules around events in a UNESCO site, and a local planner will already know which venues, streets, and viewpoints are actually available on your date.

How far in advance should we book a Basilicata wedding?

For a Sassi cave venue like Sextantio, or a name property like Palazzo Gattini, 12 to 18 months ahead is realistic if you want your first choice date. Smaller boutique properties like Villa Cheta sometimes have more flexibility closer in.
