Calabria is the toe of Italy’s boot, and it is still the part of the country most couples skip on their way to Tuscany or the Amalfi Coast. That is precisely what makes it worth a serious look. On the Tyrrhenian side, the cliffs around Tropea and Capo Vaticano drop straight into water that shifts from turquoise to deep blue depending on the hour, with views across to Stromboli and the Aeolian Islands on a clear evening. On the quieter Ionian side, the coastline slows down, castles sit on tidal islets, and three national parks (Sila, Aspromonte, and Pollino) fill the interior with forest instead of traffic.

I photograph weddings on both coasts, and the difference between them shapes the whole day. Tropea gives you cliffside drama and a well-worn wedding infrastructure. The Ionian side gives you something rawer and far less photographed. Below are five real venues to start with, plus the questions couples ask me most before booking a wedding in Calabria.

From Intimate Elopements to Big Weddings in Calabria

Calabria works just as beautifully for intimate elopements as it does for larger and multi-day celebrations.

I photograph:
– quiet, intentional elopements with just the two of you
– small weddings with close family and friends
– full wedding days with a larger guest count
– multi-day wedding celebrations, including welcome dinners and relaxed moments before or after the wedding

No matter the size or length of the celebration, my focus is always the same: real moments, strong atmosphere, and portraits that feel natural rather than posed. The scale may change, but the intention doesn’t.

Wedding Videographer in Calabria: Photo and Hybrid Video Coverage

Alongside photography, I also offer wedding video coverage in Calabria as part of a hybrid photo and video approach.

Video is treated as an extension of the photography, captured with the same sensitivity to light, timing, and atmosphere. The focus stays on real moments, movement, and sound, without staged scenes or intrusive production.

For weddings that benefit from an additional perspective, a dedicated videographer can also be included, always working in the same calm, unobtrusive way and fully aligned with how I photograph the day.

This approach works especially well for destination weddings, where intimacy, setting, and emotion matter more than spectacle.

The Best Wedding Venues in Calabria

Calabria offers two very different coastlines for a wedding: the cliffs of the Tyrrhenian side around Tropea and Capo Vaticano, and the quieter Ionian coast near Corigliano and Le Castella. Each brings its own light, mood, and flow, which matters when planning the photography and video. Below are five real venues worth researching first.

Il Faro, Capo Vaticano (Ricadi)
Set on the cliffs of Capo Vaticano, Il Faro holds up to 126 guests with sightlines across to Stromboli and the Aeolian Islands on a clear day. There is no on-site lodging, but the venue works with nearby Villa Mantineo to house overnight guests, so plan that logistics conversation early with your planner.

Capovaticano Resort Thalasso & Spa, Ricadi
A beachfront resort a few minutes from Il Faro, Capovaticano Resort holds up to 90 guests on sunset-facing terraces above the water. The property requires a minimum room block for wedding groups and does not host ceremonies in August, so if an August date matters to you, this is one to rule in or out early.

Villa Paola, Tropea
Villa Paola sits on the clifftop above Tropea’s old town, with an infinity pool and its own restaurant, De’ Minimi, built into the estate. It holds up to 90 guests. Worth noting for accuracy: Tropea faces the Tyrrhenian Sea, not the Adriatic, whatever a stray listing online might say. Its actual coast, the Costa degli Dei (Coast of the Gods), is reason enough to build a wedding around it.

Castello Ducale di Corigliano Calabro, Cosenza (Ionian side)
For a bigger, more formal wedding, Castello Ducale is a hilltop castle on the Ionian side that can hold up to 450 guests (250 outdoors, 200 in its Salone degli Specchi, the Hall of Mirrors). It runs full-service wedding planning in-house, which matters on this quieter side of the region where fewer independent planners specialize in weddings.

Le Castella, Isola di Capo Rizzuto
Le Castella is a roughly 2,500-year-old fortress standing on a tidal islet, one of the more striking sights in Calabria and a genuinely rare backdrop for wedding photos. Indoor ceremonies or receptions at the castle itself are unconfirmed, so treat it as a photo location paired with a ceremony at a nearby beach venue rather than a venue to book outright. It is worth building a shot list around regardless.

Your Calabria Wedding Photographer

I’m Dejan, a Calabria wedding photographer.
My focus is always the wedding itself, not performances for the camera. The photos are simply a reflection of the day: genuine, calm, and emotionally grounded.

I take my work seriously, but never myself too seriously. A relaxed atmosphere, clear communication, and quiet confidence make all the difference, especially for destination weddings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which coast should we choose, Tyrrhenian or Ionian?

The Tyrrhenian side around Tropea and Capo Vaticano is the more established choice, with cliffside venues, more hotels, and a wedding industry that already knows what to do with a destination wedding. The Ionian side, near Corigliano and Le Castella, is quieter and less photographed, better suited to a couple who wants their wedding to feel genuinely undiscovered rather than curated for it.

What is the best time of year for a Calabria wedding?

April through June and September through October give you warm weather without the peak summer heat, and several venues (Capovaticano Resort among them) will not host weddings in August at all. Book early either way. Calabria’s best venues are getting busier every year as more couples find them.

Which airport should our guests fly into?

Lamezia Terme is the main airport and works well for Tropea, Capo Vaticano, and most Tyrrhenian-side venues. Reggio Calabria is closer if your wedding is on the far south coast, and Crotone is the practical choice for the Ionian side near Corigliano and Le Castella.

Do we need a wedding planner in Calabria?

Strongly recommended, especially on the Ionian side where fewer vendors specialize in destination weddings. A local planner will also know which venues have hard restrictions, like Capovaticano’s August blackout and minimum room-block policy, before those become a problem.

How far in advance should we book?

12 to 18 months out for the well-known Tropea-area venues like Il Faro and Villa Paola. The Ionian side, including Castello Ducale, tends to have more flexibility closer to your date, since fewer international couples are booking there yet.
