Istria Wedding Photographer
with a Documentary and Editorial Style

Istria is Croatia’s other peninsula, north of Dalmatia and closer in character to inland Italy than to the Adriatic islands, hilltop towns, vineyards, olive groves, and castle venues spread across the countryside rather than concentrated in one coastal city. This page looks at Istria specifically, separate from the Croatia country page elsewhere on this site, which spreads out across the whole country.
I photograph weddings across the area, below are the real venues worth knowing, plus the questions couples ask me most before booking a wedding here.
From Intimate Elopements to Big Weddings in Istria
Istria’s countryside venues suit a wide range of celebrations, a castle like Grimani or Belaj works for an intimate elopement just as naturally as it does for a larger wedding with the whole estate booked out.
I photograph:
– quiet, intentional elopements with just the two of you
– small weddings with close family and friends
– full wedding days with a larger guest count
– multi-day wedding celebrations, including welcome dinners and relaxed moments before or after the wedding
No matter the size or length of the celebration, my focus is always the same: real moments, strong atmosphere, and portraits that feel natural rather than posed. The scale may change, but the intention doesn’t.

Wedding Videographer in Istria: Photo and Hybrid Video Coverage
Alongside photography, I also offer wedding video coverage in Istria as part of a hybrid photo and video approach.
Video is treated as an extension of the photography, captured with the same sensitivity to light, timing, and atmosphere. The focus stays on real moments, movement, and sound, without staged scenes or intrusive production.
For weddings that benefit from an additional perspective, a dedicated videographer can also be included, always working in the same calm, unobtrusive way and fully aligned with how I photograph the day.
This approach works especially well for destination weddings, where intimacy, setting, and emotion matter more than spectacle.
The Wedding Venues at Istria
Renaissance castles in hilltop towns and a countryside villa among vineyards, plus a coastal resort for a larger celebration.

Grimani Castle, Svetvinčenat
A Renaissance-era castle in the small inland town of Svetvinčenat, overlooking the town’s own stone piazza, run as an established wedding venue rather than a museum.
Belaj Castle, Central Istria
A countryside castle venue in the hills of central Istria, further inland than the coastal towns, set among vineyards and olive groves.
Kempinski Hotel Adriatic, Umag
A resort hotel on the coast near Umag, in Istria’s northwest, with its own events team and the infrastructure of a five-star property for a larger celebration.
Villa Stefanija, Barban
A countryside villa near the hilltop town of Barban, representative of the smaller, family-run estate venues scattered through Istria’s interior; I’d confirm exact capacity directly for your guest count.
Your Istria Wedding Photographer
I’m Dejan, a Istria wedding photographer.
My focus is always the wedding itself, not performances for the camera. The photos are simply a reflection of the day: genuine, calm, and emotionally grounded.
I take my work seriously, but never myself too seriously. A relaxed atmosphere, clear communication, and quiet confidence make all the difference, especially for destination weddings.

From the moment we met Dejan, he made us feel completely at ease. He has a calm and kind presence, and captured every emotion of the day in a way that felt honest and natural. Nothing felt forced or over-posed, yet he was always in the right place at the right time. His work feels intimate and timeless, and we’ll treasure these photos for the rest of our lives.

How the Process Works
You send me a message with a few details about your wedding.
We schedule a free consultation call to understand your plans, your priorities, and see if our approach aligns.
If it feels right, we move forward – and on the day itself, you can be fully present while I take care of documenting everything.

ISTRIA STORY

If you’re planning your wedding in Istria and looking for photography that feels natural, intentional, and true to you, I’d love to hear more about your plans.
Take your time exploring the work. If it feels like the right fit, we can talk through your ideas and see how it all comes together.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is this page different from your Pula page?
The Pula page on this site covers that specific city and its Verudela Peninsula resorts. This page looks at the wider Istrian peninsula, the hilltop castles and countryside villas spread across the region beyond Pula itself.
What’s the best time of year for an Istria wedding?
Late May through June and September give warm weather without the peak July and August heat, and Istria’s countryside venues, set among vineyards and olive groves, photograph beautifully in that shoulder-season light.
Which airport should our guests fly into?
Pula Airport covers the peninsula directly with seasonal flights, while Trieste in Italy, about an hour from much of inland Istria, often gives more reliable year-round connections for guests coming from further afield.
Are Istria’s castle venues actually set up for weddings?
Yes, several are. Grimani Castle in Svetvinčenat and Belaj Castle in central Istria are both established wedding venues rather than museums, and Kempinski Hotel Adriatic in Umag runs its own resort wedding program. I’d still confirm capacity directly with each, since published figures vary by source.
Do we need a wedding planner for an Istria wedding?
I’d recommend one for a castle or villa wedding specifically, since Istria’s countryside venues are spread across a wider area than a single resort town, and a local planner already knows which ones genuinely host weddings versus which only rent for photography.
