🌌 Why Lake Bled Is the Stuff of Wedding Dreams
If you’re dreaming of a Lake Bled wedding, you’re not alone — and you’re definitely onto something extraordinary. Lake Bled is one of those rare places where nature and history collide in the most romantic way possible. Imagine exchanging vows as a castle towers above you, or cruising to a tiny island chapel in a wooden boat. It’s the kind of location where fairytales feel real.
As a destination wedding photographer, I’ve seen many stunning venues, but Lake Bled truly stands out. Between the light, the lake reflections, and the relaxed vibe — it’s a dream to shoot here. Whether you’re planning an elopement or a three-day wedding experience, Bled delivers.

🏰 Lake Bled History and Iconic Wedding Traditions
The Legend of the Island Church
The Church of the Assumption sits at the heart of Lake Bled, accessible only by traditional wooden boats. Couples often choose it for the symbolism and the 99 stone steps leading to the entrance. Tradition says the groom must carry the bride up all 99 stairs without stopping — it’s said to bring good luck.
Once inside, many couples ring the wishing bell — another tradition believed to bless the marriage. Imagine having so much luck for your marriage?
The Castle Ceremony
Bled Castle, perched dramatically on a cliff, is one of the oldest castles in Slovenia. It’s an incredible location for civil ceremonies and portraits with panoramic views over the lake and mountains.
I’ve photographed couples there at sunset, and the golden light bouncing off the stone walls makes every photo cinematic.
Getting to Lake Bled
The closest airport is Ljubljana, about 30–40 minutes away. Other nearby international options include Trieste, Venice, and Zagreb. If your guests are traveling from abroad, it’s a good idea to provide travel guides and allow at least a day or two to settle in before the big day.

🗓️ When to Book and Ideal Dates
Best Times of Year
- May–June & September, October: Best light, milder temperatures, fewer crowds.
- July–August: Peak season, warmer, and very popular — book early.
- Winter: Quiet and can be magical with snow. Fewer outdoor ceremony options.
Booking Timeline
If you want to book on a Saturday in busy period you will have to start planning 1.5 years in advance. If you are more flexible with the dates, half a year can also be a good option.
Civil ceremonies will require you to start your booking process around 6 months in advance to arrange the documents.
One couple I worked with planned their spring wedding a half of year in advance. They were lucky to get the venue they wanted — but the real magic happened because they picked a weekday, which gave us full flexibility for light, timing, and drone shots. Their ceremony was on a quiet Tuesday and we had the island almost to ourselves.
💍 Types of Ceremonies: Legal, Church, or Symbolic?
Legal Wedding in Slovenia
You’ll need to submit translated and apostilled documents ahead of time. Ceremonies are conducted in Slovene, so a certified Slovenian court translator is required. It’s formal but entirely doable with the right support.
Church Ceremony
Catholic ceremonies require a letter from your parish priest, among other documents. Fun fact: even Evangelical or Orthodox couples can marry in a Catholic church here.
It is a very special experience to get married on the Lake Bled Island — but be sure to understand the price and some limitations like available time slots and guest capacity.
Symbolic Ceremony
It is becoming more and more popular option for destination weddings. You can personalize every aspect of it and complete the legal paperwork at home.

🏝️ Why a Trip to the Island Is Worth It
Even if you don’t get married on the island, it’s a magical place to include in your day. The tradition of the 99 steps is unforgettable, and it’s a chance to do something unique and for all the guests to enjoy the day. The island café, Potičnica, offers a great spot for refreshments with a view.
Plus, the island makes for some of the most iconic wedding portraits in all of Slovenia.

But It Comes with a Hefty Fee
While the island is undeniably magical, it’s important to know that the charm doesn’t come cheap. Even if you’re not getting married on the island, there’s still a fee involved for being there in a wedding context.
If it’s just the two of you and you’d like to get up the stairs and ring the wishing bell in the church, prices typically start around €1400 €. But if you’re planning to bring all your guests to the island and have them served there, that number can easily climb to 5000 € or more, depending on the number of guests, logistics and catering.
So, if you’re working with a budget, I often recommend investing that money elsewhere — like in unforgettable photos 😉 — and visiting the island with your guests the day before or after the wedding instead. That way, you still get the experience, but without the pressure or premium wedding surcharge.
The Pletna Boat Ride
Pletna boats are flat-bottomed wooden boats rowed by local oarsmen. They can carry about 18–20 guests per ride. It’s a picturesque and traditional way to reach the island, and a memorable experience for your guests.
⚠️ Important Lake Bled Wedding Logistics
Common Challenges
Parking can be tricky, and the area fills up fast with tourists, especially on weekends. The island has limited space, so coordinating timing is key. You’ll also want to avoid overlapping with other weddings or events.
Best Practices
- Hire a planner who knows the area well.
- Provide bus transport or shuttles for your guests.
- Avoid noon ceremonies — the light is harsh and the heat can be intense.
Hire a Local Planner
Names like Da Petra or Infinity Events come highly recommended. A local planner will help with permits, translations, organizing Pletna boats and scheduling — and trust me, it’s worth every cent.

💰 Lake Bled Wedding Costs: What to Expect
Planning a Lake Bled wedding? The total cost really depends on the kind of celebration you have in mind.
The good news: a wedding at Lake Bled can be surprisingly affordable compared to more famous destinations in Italy, the UK, or the US. But it’s important to look at the full picture — because while some things seem budget-friendly at first, extra fees can sneak up on you.
For example:
At Bled Castle, the most basic wedding dinner starts at around €60 per person, which is very reasonable considering the view and atmosphere. But there are often additional charges — for setting up tables, covering chairs, dining outdoors, or adding a welcome aperitif. Drinks, of course, are not usually included.
Then there’s the matter of logistics. Your total Lake Bled wedding cost will depend heavily on how many locations you plan to use throughout the day. If you’re moving between hotels, scenic viewpoints, the church, or a separate reception venue, you may need to arrange bus or shuttle transport, especially with international guests.
And if you’re planning a ceremony or visit to Lake Bled Island, don’t forget about the pletna boat rides and island rental fees — these can add up, particularly if you’re bringing all your guests.
Also, some Lake Bled wedding venues charge significantly more than others — even when they look similar in photos — so it’s worth comparing closely before booking.
🎉 Average Lake Bled Wedding Prices
Weddings at Lake Bled can range from intimate elopements to full-scale celebrations, and the costs reflect that flexibility. On average, here’s what you can expect:
- Elopements or micro-weddings (2–10 people): starting from €3,500–€8,000, depending on vendors, accommodation, and whether you choose a symbolic or legal ceremony.
- Larger Lake Bled weddings (30+ guests): typically start around €15,000–€25,000, but can rise quickly depending on venue, decor, entertainment, and transport.
- Luxury Lake Bled weddings: often exceed €40,000, especially if you include a reception on the island, live musicians, fireworks, or a multi-day celebration.
