Carcassonne’s medieval walled citadel, the Cité, is the reason most couples first think of this corner of the Languedoc, but the real wedding venues sit just outside it, vineyard estates and Cathar-country châteaux across the Aude countryside. This page looks at Carcassonne specifically, separate from the France country page elsewhere on this site, which spreads out across the whole country.

I photograph weddings in and around the city, a reception at a vineyard château outside town, a ceremony at a Cathar-country estate in the hills, portraits against the ramparts of the Cité itself. Below are the real venues worth knowing, plus the questions couples ask me most before booking a wedding here.

From Intimate Elopements to Big Weddings in Carcassonne

Carcassonne works just as beautifully for intimate elopements as it does for larger and multi-day celebrations.

I photograph:
– quiet, intentional elopements with just the two of you
– small weddings with close family and friends
– full wedding days with a larger guest count
– multi-day wedding celebrations, including welcome dinners and relaxed moments before or after the wedding

No matter the size or length of the celebration, my focus is always the same: real moments, strong atmosphere, and portraits that feel natural rather than posed. The scale may change, but the intention doesn’t.

Wedding Videographer in Carcassonne: Photo and Hybrid Video Coverage

Alongside photography, I also offer wedding video coverage in Carcassonne as part of a hybrid photo and video approach.

Video is treated as an extension of the photography, captured with the same sensitivity to light, timing, and atmosphere. The focus stays on real moments, movement, and sound, without staged scenes or intrusive production.

For weddings that benefit from an additional perspective, a dedicated videographer can also be included, always working in the same calm, unobtrusive way and fully aligned with how I photograph the day.

This approach works especially well for destination weddings, where intimacy, setting, and emotion matter more than spectacle.

The Best Wedding Venues in Carcassonne

Three real venues in and around Carcassonne, from a 17th-century vineyard estate known as the Versailles of Languedoc to a Cathar-country château in the Aude hills, plus the medieval Cité itself for portraits.

Wedding venue near Carcassonne, France

Château de Pennautier
A 17th-century vineyard estate a few minutes outside Carcassonne, long known locally as “the Versailles of Languedoc” for its formal French gardens and classical facade, and once visited by Louis XIII. Still owned by the same family and still a working vineyard, it hosts weddings in its grounds and reception rooms, with the estate’s own wine served on site.

Château de Chalabre
Further into the Aude countryside, in Cathar country toward the Pyrenees foothills, a château set among vineyards and woodland. A better fit for couples who want their venue genuinely remote rather than a short drive from the city.

Hôtel du Château, Carcassonne
Inside the Cité itself, a hotel venue a short walk from the ramparts, useful for a smaller wedding or reception where staying inside the medieval walls matters more than vineyard grounds.

The Cité de Carcassonne
Not a bookable venue, the medieval walled city that gives Carcassonne its name, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It doesn’t host weddings itself, but the ramparts and cobbled streets are an essential stop for portraits.

Your Carcassonne Wedding Photographer

I’m Dejan, a Carcassonne wedding photographer.
My focus is always the wedding itself, not performances for the camera. The photos are simply a reflection of the day: genuine, calm, and emotionally grounded.

I take my work seriously, but never myself too seriously. A relaxed atmosphere, clear communication, and quiet confidence make all the difference, especially for destination weddings.

From the moment we met Dejan, he made us feel completely at ease. He has a calm and kind presence, and captured every emotion of the day in a way that felt honest and natural. Nothing felt forced or over-posed, yet he was always in the right place at the right time. His work feels intimate and timeless, and we’ll treasure these photos for the rest of our lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this page different from your France page?

The France page on this site covers the whole country. This page looks specifically at Carcassonne, the medieval walled city and the vineyard châteaux and Cathar-country estates in the Aude countryside around it.

What’s the best time of year for a Carcassonne wedding?

May, June, and September give the best balance of warm weather and manageable crowds in the Cité. July and August get genuinely hot in the Languedoc and the Cité fills with tourists, worth avoiding if you want quiet portraits on the ramparts.

Which airport should our guests fly into?

Carcassonne has its own small airport with budget flights from the UK and a few other European cities. Toulouse Airport, about an hour away by car, has far more international routes and is usually the safer bet for guests coming from further afield.

Can we get married inside the Cité itself?

A civil ceremony inside the Cité’s own buildings is tightly controlled and rarely available to visiting couples. Most couples hold their ceremony and reception at a château outside town, like Pennautier or Chalabre, and treat the Cité as a portrait location instead.

Do we need a wedding planner in Carcassonne?

For a historic property like Château de Pennautier or Château de Chalabre, yes, a local planner saves real coordination time, especially for a couple planning a wedding here from abroad.
