Lake Bled is Slovenia’s postcard image, an emerald lake with a single wooded island at its center, a cliffside castle looking down from one side and the Julian Alps rising behind. Unlike the capital, there’s no congress-hotel scale here, Bled’s wedding venues are smaller and more theatrical: a church you reach only by boat, a castle courtyard, a villa that used to belong to a president. This page looks specifically at Bled, separate from the wider Slovenia guide elsewhere on this site.

I photograph weddings around the lake and its hills: a 99-step climb up to an island church, a pavilion on 30-meter pillars designed by one of Slovenia’s best-known architects, a chairlift ride to a hilltop view of the whole valley. Below are five real places worth knowing, plus the questions couples ask me most before booking a wedding here.

From Intimate Elopements to Big Weddings at Lake Bled

Lake Bled works just as beautifully for intimate elopements as it does for larger and multi-day celebrations.

I photograph:
– quiet, intentional elopements with just the two of you
– small weddings with close family and friends
– full wedding days with a larger guest count
– multi-day wedding celebrations, including welcome dinners and relaxed moments before or after the wedding

No matter the size or length of the celebration, my focus is always the same: real moments, strong atmosphere, and portraits that feel natural rather than posed. The scale may change, but the intention doesn’t.

Wedding Videographer at Lake Bled: Photo and Hybrid Video Coverage

Alongside photography, I also offer wedding video coverage at Lake Bled as part of a hybrid photo and video approach.

Video is treated as an extension of the photography, captured with the same sensitivity to light, timing, and atmosphere. The focus stays on real moments, movement, and sound, without staged scenes or intrusive production.

For weddings that benefit from an additional perspective, a dedicated videographer can also be included, always working in the same calm, unobtrusive way and fully aligned with how I photograph the day.

This approach works especially well for destination weddings, where intimacy, setting, and emotion matter more than spectacle.

The Best Wedding Venues at Lake Bled

Five places around Slovenia’s best-known lake, from an island church to a villa built for a king.

Wedding venue near Lake Bled, Slovenia

Bled Castle
Run by the Bled Culture Institute on the cliff above the lake, with two ceremony options: the open stone canopy of the lapidarium on the upper courtyard, seating 40 to 60, or the Knights’ Hall indoors as a weather backup, holding up to 100 with 70 seated. A small church wedding is also possible in the castle chapel of St. Albuin and Ingenuin, though that one seats only about 15. It’s the venue for a couple who wants the postcard view without leaving the ceremony to chance.

Bled Island
The Church of the Assumption of Mary sits at the center of the lake, reachable only by pletna boat or rowboat, and holds a religious ceremony only, a civil wedding has to be registered separately at the Municipality of Bled’s own Wedding Hall on Cesta svobode. Tradition has the groom carry the bride up all 99 stone steps from the jetty to the church, and afterward the couple rings the island’s Wishing Bell. It’s the most photographed wedding setting in Slovenia for a reason.

Vila Bled
A lakeside villa built in 1947 on the site of a former royal summer residence and later one of Tito’s own homes, now a boutique hotel on Cesta svobode. The grounds and hall hold up to 100 guests, and the Belvedere Pavilion, standing on 30-meter pillars and designed by the architect Jože Plečnik, gives a standing reception with views straight down the lake to the island. A private lido and boathouse round it out.

Grand Hotel Toplice
The only five-star hotel directly on the Bled lakeshore, on Cesta svobode near the water’s edge. It doesn’t publish fixed numbers for its meeting rooms, so I’d treat it as the option for a couple who wants full hotel service and a lakefront address, and confirm exact capacity with the hotel directly once you’re planning.

Straža
A 646-meter hill on the opposite side of the lake from the castle, with a chairlift up and a view that takes in the whole valley, the island, and the Alps behind it. No hall up here, it’s a photography stop rather than a venue, best worked into the schedule for the golden hour before or after the ceremony.

Your Lake Bled Wedding Photographer

I’m Dejan, a Lake Bled wedding photographer.
My focus is always the wedding itself, not performances for the camera. The photos are simply a reflection of the day: genuine, calm, and emotionally grounded.

I take my work seriously, but never myself too seriously. A relaxed atmosphere, clear communication, and quiet confidence make all the difference, especially for destination weddings.

From the moment we met Dejan, he made us feel completely at ease. He has a calm and kind presence, and captured every emotion of the day in a way that felt honest and natural. Nothing felt forced or over-posed, yet he was always in the right place at the right time. His work feels intimate and timeless, and we’ll treasure these photos for the rest of our lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this page different from your Slovenia page?

The Slovenia page on this site covers the country broadly, the coast, the Julian Alps, and elopement-focused towns like Kranjska Gora. This page looks specifically at Lake Bled and the venues around it.

Can we have a big wedding at Lake Bled, or is it mostly for elopements?

Bled leans smaller than Ljubljana or the coast, the venues above top out around 100 guests, which suits most destination weddings fine but is worth knowing if you’re planning something larger. For a bigger guest list, the congress hotels in Portorož or Maribor cover more ground.

Do we need a separate civil ceremony for the marriage to be legal?

In Slovenia, a marriage is only legally recognized once it’s registered by a civil officiant, so most couples handle that quietly beforehand, often at the Municipality of Bled’s own Wedding Hall, then hold their symbolic or church ceremony at the lake itself. This matters especially for Bled Island, where only a religious ceremony is offered. Worth confirming with your venue or planner exactly how they handle the two parts.

What’s the best time of year for a Lake Bled wedding?

Late spring through early autumn gives the most reliable weather and the greenest hills, which matters for an outdoor ceremony on the island or in the castle’s lapidarium. Early June and September avoid the busiest midsummer crowds around the lake.

Which airport should our guests fly into?

Ljubljana’s Jože Pučnik Airport is the closest, about 45 minutes away. Klagenfurt in Austria is under an hour and a half, and Venice is roughly three hours if guests want to combine the trip with a few days in Italy.
