Maribor is Slovenia’s second city, built along the Drava river at the foot of the Pohorje mountain, with a wine-growing tradition that runs for two thousand years under its own streets. Unlike the capital, Maribor’s wedding venues lean toward wine cellars, vineyards, and the forested hill above town rather than grand ballrooms, though a proper congress hotel still covers the more traditional reception. This page looks specifically at Maribor, separate from the wider Slovenia guide and the Ljubljana page elsewhere on this site.

I photograph weddings across the city and the Pohorje foothills: a cellar that has stored wine for two centuries, a lavender farm with its own ceremony circle, a mountain reached by cable car from the edge of the old town. Below are five real places worth knowing, plus the questions couples ask me most before booking a wedding here.

From Intimate Elopements to Big Weddings in Maribor

Maribor works just as beautifully for intimate elopements as it does for larger and multi-day celebrations.

I photograph:
– quiet, intentional elopements with just the two of you
– small weddings with close family and friends
– full wedding days with a larger guest count
– multi-day wedding celebrations, including welcome dinners and relaxed moments before or after the wedding

No matter the size or length of the celebration, my focus is always the same: real moments, strong atmosphere, and portraits that feel natural rather than posed. The scale may change, but the intention doesn’t.

Wedding Videographer in Maribor: Photo and Hybrid Video Coverage

Alongside photography, I also offer wedding video coverage in Maribor as part of a hybrid photo and video approach.

Video is treated as an extension of the photography, captured with the same sensitivity to light, timing, and atmosphere. The focus stays on real moments, movement, and sound, without staged scenes or intrusive production.

For weddings that benefit from an additional perspective, a dedicated videographer can also be included, always working in the same calm, unobtrusive way and fully aligned with how I photograph the day.

This approach works especially well for destination weddings, where intimacy, setting, and emotion matter more than spectacle.

The Best Wedding Venues in Maribor

Five places in and around Slovenia’s second city, from a two-hundred-year-old wine cellar under the main square to a lavender farm at the foot of Pohorje.

Wedding venue near Maribor, Slovenia

Congress Center Habakuk, Maribor
A four-star hotel on Ulica Heroja Šlandra, built into the hillside above Mestni park and the city zoo, with its own spa and eight banquet and conference halls, the largest around 407 square meters. It’s the proper full-service option in Maribor: ceremony, reception, and rooms for the whole wedding party under one roof, with halls that scale from a private dinner to several hundred guests.

Štajerska sivka, Kamnica
A working lavender farm five minutes outside the city, with thousands of lavender bushes and a ceremony spot called the lavender heart set in the middle of the plantation. The reception moves into a wooden barn fitted out with lights and sound, or into a lit, transparent wedding tent strung above the fields, and it holds up to 140 guests. There’s even an apartment on site for the two of you afterward.

Vinag Wine Cellar, Maribor
Two-hundred-year-old cellars running directly under Trg svobode, Maribor’s main square, holding an archive of more than 250,000 bottles and five million liters of wine. The space seats up to 50, which makes it better suited to an intimate reception or a tasting evening than a full wedding day, and every guest starts with a tasting of three house wines before anything else happens.

Mariborsko Pohorje
The forested hill rising straight out of the city, reached by a cable car that starts near Mestni park. No hall up here, but the viewpoints and forest trails make for some of the best portraits around Maribor, especially in late afternoon light. I’d treat it as a photography stop before or after the day rather than the ceremony site itself.

Vurberk Castle & Lent
Vurberk, above the Drava east of the city, is a genuine ruin now, just the Renaissance defensive ring, a tower, and a portal with the old Vurberk dragon still carved into the stone, so it works purely as a backdrop rather than a venue. Closer to the center, Lent, the old town’s riverside quarter, gives the same honest trade: no hall to book, but some of the prettiest streets in Maribor for a walk between the ceremony and the reception.

Your Maribor Wedding Photographer

I’m Dejan, a Maribor wedding photographer.
My focus is always the wedding itself, not performances for the camera. The photos are simply a reflection of the day: genuine, calm, and emotionally grounded.

I take my work seriously, but never myself too seriously. A relaxed atmosphere, clear communication, and quiet confidence make all the difference, especially for destination weddings.

From the moment we met Dejan, he made us feel completely at ease. He has a calm and kind presence, and captured every emotion of the day in a way that felt honest and natural. Nothing felt forced or over-posed, yet he was always in the right place at the right time. His work feels intimate and timeless, and we’ll treasure these photos for the rest of our lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this page different from your Slovenia page?

The Slovenia page on this site covers the country broadly, the coast, the Julian Alps, and elopement-focused towns like Kranjska Gora. This page looks specifically at Maribor and the venues in and around Slovenia’s second city.

Can we have a big wedding in Maribor, or is it mostly for small gatherings?

Maribor works for both. Congress Center Habakuk’s halls scale up to several hundred guests for a full wedding day, while Štajerska sivka and the Vinag Wine Cellar suit a smaller, more intimate celebration, so the city covers a wider range than some of the elopement-only towns on this site.

Do we need a separate civil ceremony for the marriage to be legal?

In Slovenia, a marriage is only legally recognized once it’s registered by a civil officiant, so most couples handle that quietly beforehand or through their venue, then hold their symbolic ceremony on the day itself. Worth confirming with your venue or planner exactly how they handle the two parts.

What’s the best time of year for a Maribor wedding?

Late spring through early autumn works best, especially if the lavender fields at Štajerska sivka are part of the plan. The lavender blooms through most of the summer, so a wedding timed for July or early August gets the fields at their fullest.

Which airport should our guests fly into?

Maribor Edvard Rusjan Airport is the closest, just outside the city, though it has limited international routes. Graz in Austria is under an hour’s drive and usually has more flight options, and Ljubljana’s Jože Pučnik Airport is about an hour and a half away.
