Piran is the best-preserved Venetian town on the Slovenian coast, a maze of narrow stone streets climbing from Tartinijev trg up to the old town walls, with the Adriatic on three sides. Unlike the capital, there’s no single grand castle here, the wedding venues instead run from a boutique in-town hotel to a vineyard estate in the Istrian hills to the largest congress resort in the country, a few minutes down the coast in Portorož. This page looks specifically at Piran and its immediate coastline, separate from the wider Slovenia guide elsewhere on this site.

I photograph weddings along this stretch of coast: a rooftop terrace fifty meters from Tartini’s statue, a 24-hectare vineyard built from Istrian blue stone, a Venetian square that’s been a backdrop for wedding photos for centuries. Below are five real places worth knowing, plus the questions couples ask me most before booking a wedding here.

From Intimate Elopements to Big Weddings in Piran

Piran works just as beautifully for intimate elopements as it does for larger and multi-day celebrations.

I photograph:
– quiet, intentional elopements with just the two of you
– small weddings with close family and friends
– full wedding days with a larger guest count
– multi-day wedding celebrations, including welcome dinners and relaxed moments before or after the wedding

No matter the size or length of the celebration, my focus is always the same: real moments, strong atmosphere, and portraits that feel natural rather than posed. The scale may change, but the intention doesn’t.

Wedding Videographer in Piran: Photo and Hybrid Video Coverage

Alongside photography, I also offer wedding video coverage in Piran as part of a hybrid photo and video approach.

Video is treated as an extension of the photography, captured with the same sensitivity to light, timing, and atmosphere. The focus stays on real moments, movement, and sound, without staged scenes or intrusive production.

For weddings that benefit from an additional perspective, a dedicated videographer can also be included, always working in the same calm, unobtrusive way and fully aligned with how I photograph the day.

This approach works especially well for destination weddings, where intimacy, setting, and emotion matter more than spectacle.

The Best Wedding Venues in Piran

Five places along Piran and the coast, from a Venetian square to a congress resort by the sea.

Wedding venue near Piran, Slovenia

Art Hotel Tartini, Piran
Fifty meters from Tartinijev trg, in the heart of the old town, this boutique hotel has three terraces looking out over the sea or the bay, used for private parties and small weddings, plus a 96-square-meter conference hall that seats up to 50. It’s the choice for a couple who wants to marry inside Piran itself rather than drive out to it.

Santomas Estate, Šmarje pri Kopru
A 24-hectare vineyard and olive estate about twenty minutes inland, built in 2005 from Istrian blue stone across three levels. The tasting room seats up to 70 and opens onto a terrace and park in the warmer months, with the estate’s own wine and olive oil poured for guests. It trades the sea view for vines and quiet hills, which suits a couple who wants Istria rather than the coast itself.

Kempinski Palace Portorož
A five-star palace hotel a few minutes from Piran, with the Crystal Hall ballroom and its terrace overlooking the historic palace park. The grounds and ballroom scale from an outdoor ceremony for around 250 up to a reception for 700, with the full infrastructure of a luxury resort behind it. The formal, old-world choice on this stretch of coast.

Grand Hotel Bernardin, Portorož
The largest congress resort in Slovenia, with 17 banquet venues and its Europa Congress Hall alone holding up to 1,100 for a cinema-style event or around 1,000 for a seated banquet. It’s the venue for a couple who wants a genuinely large wedding on the coast, with rooms for the whole guest list within the same resort.

Tartinijev trg & Punta
Piran’s Venetian main square, ringed by Gothic houses and watched over by the Church of St. George above, and Punta, the headland at the tip of the peninsula with the old lighthouse. Neither is a hall to book, they’re the backdrop every Piran wedding borrows for twenty minutes of portraits between the ceremony and the reception, and they’re worth building time for in the schedule.

Your Piran Wedding Photographer

I’m Dejan, a Piran wedding photographer.
My focus is always the wedding itself, not performances for the camera. The photos are simply a reflection of the day: genuine, calm, and emotionally grounded.

I take my work seriously, but never myself too seriously. A relaxed atmosphere, clear communication, and quiet confidence make all the difference, especially for destination weddings.

From the moment we met Dejan, he made us feel completely at ease. He has a calm and kind presence, and captured every emotion of the day in a way that felt honest and natural. Nothing felt forced or over-posed, yet he was always in the right place at the right time. His work feels intimate and timeless, and we’ll treasure these photos for the rest of our lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this page different from your Slovenia page?

The Slovenia page on this site covers the country broadly, the coast, the Julian Alps, and elopement-focused towns like Kranjska Gora. This page looks specifically at Piran and the venues along this stretch of the coast.

Can we have a big wedding in Piran, or is it mostly for elopements?

Both. Art Hotel Tartini and Santomas Estate suit a smaller, more intimate celebration, while Kempinski Palace Portorož and Grand Hotel Bernardin scale up to several hundred guests, so this stretch of coast covers a wider range than some of the elopement-only towns on this site.

Do we need a separate civil ceremony for the marriage to be legal?

In Slovenia, a marriage is only legally recognized once it’s registered by a civil officiant, so most couples handle that quietly beforehand or through their venue, then hold their symbolic ceremony on the day itself. Worth confirming with your venue or planner exactly how they handle the two parts.

What’s the best time of year for a Piran wedding?

Late spring and early autumn give the warmest sea without the peak-summer crowds that fill Tartinijev trg in July and August, which matters if you’re planning portraits in the square itself.

Which airport should our guests fly into?

Trieste in Italy is the closest, under 40 minutes away, and usually has the widest choice of fares. Ljubljana’s Jože Pučnik Airport is about an hour and a half, and Venice is roughly two and a half hours if guests want to combine the trip with a few days in Italy.
