The Best Wedding Venues in Liguria
Liguria’s best venues range from a hilltop fortress above Portofino’s harbour to a 14th century abbey draped in wisteria, rather than sitting only around Genoa or the Cinque Terre. Below are five real venues worth researching first.
Belmond Hotel Splendido, Portofino
A 16th century former monastery turned five star hotel on the hillside above Portofino’s harbour, the Splendido holds ceremonies and receptions across its terraced gardens with sightlines straight down to the pastel houses and the bay. It comfortably hosts around 120 guests, and the property runs its own spa for a wedding weekend rather than a single day. Book well ahead. Portofino has a limited number of venues that can actually hold a wedding of any size, and this is one of the best known.
La Cervara, between Santa Margherita and Portofino
La Cervara is a 14th century abbey and an official Italian National Monument, set on the coastal road with Renaissance gardens draped in wisteria come spring. The Salone delle Feste, its grand indoor hall, was built to handle serious productions, so it works for a large formal reception as easily as an intimate one. It’s the venue to choose if history and architecture matter to you as much as the sea view.
Castello Brown, above Portofino village
A municipal fortress sitting directly above Portofino’s harbour, Castello Brown is licensed for legally binding civil ceremonies, so the paperwork and the photographs happen in the same dramatic spot. The terrace looks straight down over the bay, which is the whole appeal, but access is steep and on foot, so guests typically need a shuttle arranged in advance rather than walking up in wedding shoes.
Castello Canevaro, Zoagli
A private estate on a ridge above the sea between Santa Margherita and Chiavari, Castello Canevaro is a quieter, more personal alternative to the bigger Portofino names. Its sea facing terrace and direct beach access below the property give a more relaxed, less trafficked version of the same coastline, suited to a smaller guest list that wants privacy over prestige.
Villa Durazzo, Santa Margherita Ligure
Right in the center of Santa Margherita, Villa Durazzo is a 17th century villa surrounded by historic terraced gardens, close enough to town that guests can walk in from their hotel. It works especially well for a smaller, elopement style ceremony, where the garden setting does the work without needing a large production around it.

Genoa Airport is the closest and most direct option for the whole Tigullio coast, with Portofino, Santa Margherita and Zoagli all under an hour away by car or a scenic ferry ride along the coast.
Do we need to arrange transport for guests at a venue like Castello Brown?
Yes. Castello Brown sits above Portofino village and the walk up is steep, cobbled and not realistic in wedding shoes for most guests. A shuttle or a small fleet of cars timed to the ceremony is standard practice here, and it’s worth building into your planning early rather than as an afterthought.
Do we need a wedding planner in Liguria?
Strongly recommended, particularly for permitting at municipal and historic sites like Castello Brown and La Cervara, where booking terms and civil ceremony paperwork can differ from a private villa.
